Mitochondrial and
cellular insights.
Unlocking better drug candidates.

Mitochondrial dysfunction is implicated in a wide range of complex diseases, yet identifying compounds that improve mitochondrial and cellular health remains challenging.

Mitotype combines patient-derived translatable cell models, high-throughput phenotypic screening and deep mitochondrial analysis to give drug discovery teams a clearer picture of how compounds perform in disease-relevant biology.

Mitochondria do not operate in isolation and have complex interactions with other cellular organelles. We have therefore developed robust measurements for associated cellular pathways which impact mitochondrial and cellular health.

We work across many neurodegenerative and rare conditions, using these models across multiple cell types. We're expanding our disease areas all the time - see below our current list of disease areas covered.

What we do

Measure granularly

Mitochondria are complex organelles, with many interconnected processes contributing to overall cellular health. Our methodology measures more than 100 physiological parameters within a single cell, capturing changes across mitochondrial and cellular function.

These measurements are then brought together through our BioScore - a single response score that helps research teams identify the compounds showing meaningful biological effects and prioritise candidates for further investigation.

Model precisely

Mitotype’s fully-phenotyped models are derived from patients with specific diseases and genetic backgrounds, providing a human biological context for compound testing. We work with multiple cell types, including fibroblasts, neurons and astrocytes, and can test across different genotyped patient lines.

Our cellular reprogramming methods retain key features of cellular ageing, helping preserve characteristics that are relevant to disease biology. This means researchers can assess compounds in models that reflect aspects of the biology they are ultimately seeking to influence, so our models are more translatable to the clinic setting.

Screen broadly

We use high-throughput formats to evaluate compound libraries efficiently, including 1536-well screening with patient-derived cells. This allows for large numbers of compounds to be assessed while retaining the disease-relevant biology of the model.

Screening strategies can be designed around the question being asked, whether that means identifying compounds that improve a cellular phenotype, investigating a potential mechanism or looking
for early signs of toxicity.

Adapt intelligently

No two drug discovery programmes ever have exactly the same requirements. Mitotype develops bespoke, multiplexed assays to investigate the pathways, targets and cellular phenotypes most relevant to each study.

Depending on the programme, this might include mitochondrial function, lysosomal function, protein aggregation and other measures associated with the disease or biological process under investigation.

Interpret rigorously

Good data needs good interpretation. Our scientists bring over a decade of experience in mitochondrial and cellular research to each study.

We interpret complex findings in their biological context, helping distinguish meaningful signals from results that need further investigation. The BioScore also provides an additional way to compare compound responses by bringing multiple measurements into a single score, creating a clear evidence base for go/no-go decisions.

Where we can help

Your scientific partner

Mitotype contributes at different stages of the drug discovery process. As your scientific partner, we can provide a specific assay or screening study, or work with your team over several stages of development.

Hit ID

We validate large libraries of therapeutic candidates with rapid, high-throughput evaluation in patient-derived cells, using 1536-well formats. We identify positive modulators and flag toxicity early.

Lead ID

Not all hits are created equal. Mitotype runs bespoke assays in patient-derived models to validate the impact of a lead compound across various cell types in multiple genotyped patient lines, separating real leads from noise.

Lead development

Optimise your leads through multiple rounds of testing in patient-derived cells. We deliver custom assays, dose-response data, potency and selectivity profiling, all grounded in patient biology.

Toxicity studies

Mitotype specialises in mitochondrial and cellular toxicity measures for early identification of off-target effects. Catching these now saves significant time and costs downstream.

Clinical studies

While we don’t conduct clinical studies directly, Mitotype can support patient specific response to the clinical candidate working with you on a personalised medicine approach.
